It might be a bit much to say that there's a Trumans Water revival happening in the latter part of the 21st century's first decade, but a band like Night Wounds, drawing on the same sense of skronk and angry, wired indie rock bubbling under in the early '90s for a newer time, might be poised to spearhead it. That Night Wounds know and love their Sonic Youth as well as many later noise scenes, especially that of their native L.A. centered around the figure of Brian Miller, is no surprise, and Allergic to Heat is beholden to their touchstones still -- but they do so with gusto. A song like "Ex Best Friend" has a focus to the guitar attack that keeps things tense rather than sloppy, while the tight groove of "Nineteen" is almost surprising to hear and all the more effective as a result. Other songs like "Hex Appeal," which pulls the sing-through-a-megaphone trick better than most, and the tight screech and rumble of "X.O.T." also stand out.
